Hungry Joe’s Mighty Review of 2017
From endless Brexit news and snap general elections, to celebrity engagements, pregnancies and break-ups, 2017 has been one hell of a year!
It was the year that brought us Fidget Spinners, and internet infamy for the children of Professor Robert Kelly live on BBC News.
The usually pristine Oscars became a comedy of errors as Warren Beatty initially incorrectly awarded the top gong of Best Picture to La La Land instead of the real winner Moonlight, and Amanda Holden was left similarly red faced on This Morning after asking astronaut Tim Peake about his time on the moon.
There really is only one word to sum up the year and that is ‘covfefe’!
So if you struggled to keep up with all the ins and outs, highs and lows and tos and fros of the past 12 months, then fear not! When we’re not feasting on our seriously satisfying meals, the Hungry Joe’s team has kept its finger on the cultural pulse this year and compiled THIS – the ultimate barometer of Joes. Find out below who we have crowned the High Flyers and who had an absolutely JOkE of 2017.
High Flying Joes:
Serena Williams: Triumphing at the Women’s Australia Open for an Open Era record 7th time while simultaneously becoming the most successful Grand Slam winner in the history of professional tennis with 23 singles titles to her name. It’s fair to say Serena had a pretty good start to 2017. She has since given birth to her first child and married tech entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. It looks like next year may rival this one, as she is also rumoured to be a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle… watch this space!
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh: Talking of the Royals, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had a year to remember. With the announcement of another great grandchild on the way and Prince Harry’s engagement, the head of state and the Duke of Edinburgh have had much to celebrate this year. However, the icing on the cake was surely celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary, an incredible 70 years together. Congratulations both!
The Stranger Things cast: After turning our world upside down in 2016, the sci-fi smash Stranger Things returned this year. Featuring a talented young cast, gripping plot lines and an oddly cute alien/monster/demodog named after one of the Three Musketeers, there was much to love in season 2.
Outside of the show, it has been a joy to watch the stars enjoy their newfound fame. Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) recently hit 10m followers on Instagram and we think you’ll enjoy the boys take on this Motown medley on James Corden’s The Late Late Show. Media mutterings indicate the third series is to be released in late 2018 and we can’t wait!
Taylor Swift: New album? Check. New chart-topping single full of barbed lyrics and beef with former friends, scorned exes and the media? Check. Dramatic deletion of all her social media posts? Check. Yes Taylor did it again with the release of her sixth album – Reputation. Despite being overlooked at the Grammys, we think 2017 still proved to be a great year for Taylor and her army of ‘Swifties’.
Ed Sheeran: Taylor’s BFF also had a great 2017. Despite being just one man armed with only a tiny guitar, Ed rocked Glastonbury 2017 closing the festival in sing-a-long style, proving the keyboard warriors and internet haters wrong. However, poor Ed was later brought down to earth with a bump after a cycling accident saw him break his right arm, forcing him to cancel tour dates.
Amber and Kem: They had us glued to our screens during the summer TV phenomenon that was Love Island and Amber and Kem continued to hit the headlines after winning the ITV reality dating show. Despite seemingly being on the precipice of becoming TV’s next power couple, following a whirlwind romance of 132 days, the curtain call came early for Amber and Kem as they announced their parting of ways in December. Ah well, there’s plenty more fish in the Love Island sea as a new series is set to return in 2018.
Who had a JOkE of a year?:
Gemma Collins: As Romford royalty and Queen of memes, Gemma has had plenty to shout about in recent years. However, she was left shouting for a different reason this year at the Radio 1 Teen Awards when she fell through an open stage trap live on stage. Despite the tumble and bruised ego, she channelled Chumbawamba and returned to the stage, later telling hosts, Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora, “I had the best time of my life.” A year we’re sure Gemma will want to forget.
Amir Khan: This year saw many celebrities offer grovelling apologies for historic Tweets excavated by internet users, and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!’s Amir Khan was no exception. In 2012, when asked if he would ever appear on the show Amir responded bluntly “No it’s for has-beens”. Amir went on to finish in fifth place, but not before viewers called him out for being a bully.
Prue Leith: This next JOkEr should come with a spoiler alert. It is, of course, Prue Leith who despite proving popular as the new judge on The Great British Bake Off, ended the series prematurely congratulating champion Sophie Faldo on Twitter eight hours before the show aired. Whoops! As a result Prue finishes in last place and wins our wooden spoon which we are sure she will find a good use for.
